How will you reduce consumption to win the race to Net Zero?
At the 21st Conference of Parties (COP) meeting, which took place in Paris in 2015, 196 nations agreed to work together to curb global temperature rise to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit warming to 1.5°C. The set of rules to tackle climate change have become known as the Paris Agreement.
In 2018, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change warned that, to avoid the catastrophic impacts of climate change, global warming must not exceed 1.5°C. To achieve this, Global Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions must be reduced by half by 2030 and drop to Net Zero by 2050.
Achieving Net Zero requires comprehensive transformation across virtually all economic sectors. But with nearly 75% or three-quarters of today’s emissions being energy-related (mainly from the combustion of fossil fuels), the energy sector must play a central role in this transformation1.
Creating sustainable energy changes
The UK’s 30 million homes account for more than 21% of the nation’s total carbon emissions, with around three-quarters of this coming from our heating systems (including generating hot water).
Energy Catapult Analysis shows that in 2017, the average household generated 2,745kg of CO2 emissions from heating. Until more recently the UK was aiming to cut carbon emissions by 80% by 2050, which would mean reducing the carbon generated from heating to 692kg CO2 annually. To reach the Net Zero 2050 target that the UK has now adopted, we need to go even further and reduce heating emissions to 138kg CO2 per household – a colossal 95% reduction2.
Decarbonizing domestic heating and improving the energy efficiency of homes is a major part of reaching Net Zero. But so too is empowering consumers to make better energy and water consumption choices. As part of GHG Scope 3 (i.e. emissions not associated directly with the company itself, but that occur in a company’s value chain), utilities must empower householders/consumers to make better energy and water consumption choices, by changing their behaviors in order to reduce usage. And as climate change awareness and concern rises, increasingly, customers are looking to their suppliers to help them become more efficient.
How Advizzo can help
Nudging customers towards making sustainable changes
Let us help you nudge your customers towards making sustainable changes in their behavior to reduce their consumption. Our data and behavioral science based customer engagement solution provides personalized insights, tips and advice based on information collected about an individual household.
Our solution leverages the powerful theory and psychology of nudging, which you can read about in our blog ‘How a nudge can help your customer save energy and water’. Using data, we surface opportunities to help individual customers and households to take relevant actions to reduce their carbon footprint – with impressive results, which you can read about in our survey results blog.
Keeping on the right track
We also help suppliers to measure, analyse, report and track their efforts and results – to achieve Net Zero and retain that status. We can measure an individual household’s consumption using smart and non smart meter data, and having recommended measures to reduce consumption, we can track results and correlate it with carbon emissions, to help energy suppliers report on their GHG Scope 3 goals.
Conclusion
Drastic action is required. Achieving Net Zero is not a marathon with a finish line, it’s a never ending race that requires new approaches, new tools and new partnerships and that will need constant monitoring and adaptation over time.
